5 TIPS TO ENJOY SUMMER FOODS WITH DENTURES

If you’ve recently invested in dentures, you don’t need to spend another summer avoiding your favorite meals, like steak and corn on the cob. Your dentures will allow you to indulge in many seasonal treats that you’ve been avoiding since losing your teeth; however, there are a few tips to keep in mind as you adjust to your new smile. Although they will closely look and feel natural, here are 5 tips to make eating easier during the upcoming summer festivities.

1. Stick with Soft Foods

It’s going to take time for your mouth to adapt to using dentures, which means your gums might be a bit sore at first. It’s best to stick with softer foods until you navigate past the adjustment period. There are many great foods you can enjoy, like pudding, yogurt, smoothies, and oatmeal. You can slowly begin introducing harder foods as you get used to your new teeth.

2. Be Careful with Hot Foods

Nothing beats a warm cup of tea by the pool or hot cocoa around the campfire. Unfortunately, exposing your dentures to heat might cause them to warp. Not to mention, you may not realize a liquid is too hot until after a burn has occurred because your dentures insulate your mouth. You’ll want to test foods or beverages in small amounts to ensure they are at the right temperature.

3. Cut Your Food into Small Pieces

You don’t want to bite off more than you can chew if you wear dentures because it can cause them to be dislodged. You can also put extra strain on your gums, denture, and jaw. You can avoid unnecessary pain or embarrassment by cutting your food into small pieces to make it easier to chew. This is especially important if you’ll be eating anything that might require a lot of chewing, like steak or raw vegetables.

4. Drink Plenty of Water

Water is crucial for keeping you hydrated during the summer, but it’s also essential for your new smile. Sugary and starchy snacks can cling to your teeth and underneath your denture. Drinking plenty of water will help rinse food particles from your mouth to avoid irritation and keep foul odors at bay.

5. Be Picky About Meats

Although you’ll be able to chow down on many meats, there are some that are difficult to chew when eating with dentures. If you like barbeque, avoid meats on a bone, like ribs. Instead of firing up the grill, consider slow-cooked or ground meats because they are easier to chew.

Smile Brightly for Summer

Your dentures will allow you to look and feel your best this summer. You’ll boost your confidence while soaking up the sunshine and warm weather.
