Most people living with bite issues are aware of the most common form of treatment: wearing metal braces. While this method of bite correction is effective, it does noticeably alter the patient’s appearance. As a result of the advancements in orthodontic care, patients now have the option of fixing their smile with ceramic braces. Before you make a decision about how to straighten your teeth, though, you need to know, “Do ceramic braces take longer than metal braces?” Find out the answer and learn more about the ceramic alternative as you continue reading!

How Ceramic Braces Work

The ceramic alternative is similar to metal braces in that it relies on wires and brackets to gradually adjust the teeth until they are straightened. With ceramic braces, however, patients are able to experience a more discreet treatment process.

The following details some specific differences between the two forms of treatment:

  • Whereas traditional braces utilize metal brackets, the ceramic alternative relies on ceramic, porcelain or plastic.
  • With ceramic braces, the brackets will either be clear or tooth-colored to blend into the smile line.
  • In most cases, patients have the option of having a clear wire placed that further contributes to a more natural-looking application.

What’s even more important to know is that ceramic braces are able to deliver the same results as their metal predecessors. How do they match up when it comes to treatment time, though?

The Usual Treatment Time with Ceramic Braces

On average, treatment with metal braces can take from less than a year to three years. It ultimately comes down to the severity of the patient’s malocclusion (bite problems).

With ceramic braces, the treatment time is relatively similar, as the process can generally take from a year to three years. The difference, however, is that along the way, patients are able to maintain a more aesthetic smile.

There is still more to explore about ceramic braces, namely the cost and coverage availability.

Exploring the Cost of Ceramic Braces

When comparing the two processes, a logical question to ask is, “Do ceramic braces cost more?” While each situation is unique, on average the prices of both forms of treatment are comparable, ranging from $2,000 to $8,000.

As you make a decision about which route to take, you should keep in mind that some dental insurance holders don’t cover ceramic braces. If this is the case for you, then you’ll be responsible for paying completely out-of-pocket.

In the event that the procedure isn’t covered, you can ask your orthodontist if he or she accepts CareCredit, which is a low-to-no interest form of financing for dental care.

With ceramic braces, you now have a way to achieve the look you’ve always wanted without having to endure the embarrassment that can come along with wearing metal braces. To find out if you’re eligible for the procedure, contact a local orthodontist to schedule a visit today!
