Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Dr. Hagen knew from the time he was in 1st grade that he wanted to be a physician. The story, however, might surprise you. He was sitting in church when one of his close friends got violently ill. When he asked his mother what would happen to his friend, she explained what doctors do and how they would help his friend feel better again. Then and there, he knew he wanted to dedicate his life to doing the same thing.
It wasn’t until college that Dr. Hagen’s interest shifted to dentistry though. Since he didn’t like his own dentist, he never considered the same career path for himself. After accompanying some friends to The Ohio State College of Dentistry open house, that all changed. Seeing the wax-ups, denture set-ups, and everything else the students were working on piqued his interest. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
After studying at Xavier University, Dr. Hagen attended dental school at The Ohio State University, earning his DDS in 1979. Still, his quest for knowledge didn’t stop there. Throughout the years, he has completed countless hours of continuing education. As a result, he is certified in Diode Lasers and has advanced training in everything from dental implants to whole mouth rehabilitation. Furthermore, he was a CEREC® trainer from 1999 to 2003 and a CoChair of the Scientific Program Committee with the Cincinnati Dental Society.
To this day, Dr. Hagen remains passionate about using the latest techniques to provide his patients with the efficient, comfortable, and world-class care they deserve. For this reason, he maintains an active membership with several professional organizations, including:
- American Dental Association
- Indiana State Dental Association
- Academy of Laser Dentistry
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Dr. Hagen and his wife of nearly 30 years, Jenny, share a blended family of six children and many grandchildren together. As a family, they love to spend time together, especially at the beach.
Dr. Hagen also enjoys cycling and has completed Blood, Sweat, and Gears (a challenging 103-mile ride in the mountains) an impressive seven times. Even though he is a cyclist, he enjoys joining his wife on runs. In fact, she has even talked him into running three half-marathons!
When Dr. Hagen and his wife aren’t being active, they enjoy reading and going to XU basketball games.
